A great initiative to narrow down the Konkani divide.

    A few suggestions:

    1. Consider releasing the free conversion utility also as a standalone application. That will enable users to benefit even when they are not connected to the internet, and will also help disseminate the programme widely, especially among institutions which use computers that are not connected to the internet.

    2. Add a functionality for non-unicode to unicode conversion in the same script.

    3. Add a basic unicode font text editor which can support direct input in any selected script.

    4. Release a plug-in that can be freely embedded in Konkani websites and blogs so as to allow readers to freely choose whichever script they wish.

    Looking forward to your work.

    Simply Fascinating!!
It will be great help for like minded people based in Mumbai like me
to translate in Konkani from some of the Kannada Literature.
    A suggestion —
I am using software “Natural Reader” to convert English Text in to
Audio in MP3 Format. A similar software for Konkani-Devnagari will
    be of great help.

    • KONKANVERTER says:

Schwa Deletion rules we have developed for KONKANVERTER will help us to work on TEXT TO SPEECH software for Konkani. Its in our agenda. We will be taking up that once we fine tune the Conversion rules.

  20. Dinesh Shenoy Basti says:

Wow, this is such a wonderful tool:)

Looking forward to use it and enjoy Konkani literature:)

Kudos to dear Guru and his team for making this possible:)

  21. I was always looking forward for a site, where I could convert English words or sentences to Konkani, if you could also work on that it would be great!
I know there is a English-Konkani dictionary available, so if that’s fed in the database, the words could translated easily for now! Then slowly working on the sentences and grammar it could replace Google Translator in big scale and lot of English writers who are not good in Konkani grammar and words could use this feature and share a lot of knowledge and wisdom everywhere! 🙂

    • KONKANVERTER says:

World Institute of Konkani Language has several Language Technology initiatives in its agenda. Konkani Translation engine to English and other Indian languages or Vice Versa, is also on the list. Thanks for suggestion.

You can copy the output text by blocking the text with mouse curser and pressing Ctrl C on your Keyboard. Then you can paste using Ctrl V in any blog or website, even a document.

  25. Pratap Naik, S.J. says:

I sincerely appreciate the efforts of those who worked for Konkanverter. However, being a Konknni linguist and a full-time Konknni researcher and teacher of Konknni in Roman, Kannada and Devanagari scripts, I was totally disappointed with Konkanverter’s and its well wishers’ many claims. It fails miserably to transliterate Konknni written in Roman script to any other scripts, namely Kannada, Devanagari and Malayalm. Transliteration has to take into account the orthography of a language in a particular script. Day by day the use of Roman script for Konknni is increasing. In this context Konanverter has a long way to go to become an adequate tool for transliteration. In promotion of a language, the accuracy of orthography is far more important than mere zeal, because zeal may lead to unforeseen disastrous effects.

    • KONKANVERTER says:

      Dear Shri Pratap Naik,
Thank you for your comment. We respect your views on incorrect results produced by the KONKANVERTER in Transliterating Konkani Text from Romi Script to other Scripts.
However, these are “known issues” and these have been listed in the Tool Kit Menu already. Kindly refer. If there are any other issues you have come across while testing, kindly let us know.
KONKANVERTER has been launched as a beta release. We are working on fine-tuning the rules based on feedbacks received by several Linguists and Language Teachers like you. We are also building a Text Corpus for Language Technology and with the help of the Corpus; these issues will be solved in due course.

  26. Pratap Naik, S.J. says:

At present, it is not my intention to expect 100% accuracy from Konkanverter. Any language tool should enhance the progress of a language and should not hinder it. You have asked suggestions to improve Konkanverter. Since my many suggestions are related to orthography they have to be brought to the notice of technicians of Konkanverter face to face to save time and energy and ensure accuracy. Writing system in Konknni language is to a great extant standardized in three scripts, four dialects and four orthographies, namely,
    1. Catholic Konknni written in Roman script.
    2. Goan Hindu Konknni written in Devanagari script.
    3. Mangalore Catholic Konknni written in Kannada script.
    4. GSB Konknni written in Kannnada script.
Since Konknni is required only to preserve linguistic and cultural identity, the above mentioned dialects, scripts and orthographies will continue to preserve their individual features and uniqueness.
Under the heading “HOW KONKANI WILL GET BENEFITED BY KONKANVERTER?” six claims are made by the producers of Konkanverter. The sixth claim reads “There will be no hurdles in reading the text, enjoying and appreciating literature, enriching one’s vocabulary, analyzing language, comprehending dialect variations and ultimate standardization of the Konkani language.” Konknni so far has survived because of the principle “Unity in diversity”. Standardization of Konknni will make it as a dead language,as it happened in the case of Sanskrit. “Unity in uniformity” will kill the richness of various dialects of a language. Instead of dreaming for an impossible dream I would appreciate that Konkanverter focuses its entire attention and energy on how to improve transliteration skill from one script of Konknni to its other scripts within the accepted standardized orthography of each of the script.

    • KONKANVERTER says:

Please refer to our “WHAT KONKNVERTER IS NOT?” section in FAQs Menu for explanation on dialects.

KONKANVERTER DO NOT change the dialect of Input text. For Example, if you want to convert Mangalorean Catholic Konkani Dialect Text written in Kannada Script to Devanagari Script, The Konkanverter will convert only the script, but your text will still be in Mangalroean Catholic Dialect of Konkani.

Excellent contribution to all Indians.. Thanks a tonne.

May I request you to extend this to transliterate any given website? For example- I know marathi (RWS) and kannada (S), I want to read kannada newspapers using marathi script. I have to copy paste the articles and read, which is great at present, but I am asking for more 🙂

Also a request to transliterate pdf files in kannada to devanagari.. THat will be an excellent contribution 🙂

    THanks,
    Vinod
